CPPU (forchlorfenuron) is a synthetic cytokinin and the active ingredient of a plant growth regulator which may be used in the production of table grape varieties where applications after fruit set increase berry size and firmness. In wine grape varieties (Vitis vinifera cv), CPPU increases fruit set when applied at bloom. Three vineyards with historically poor fruit set were selected to examine the effects of bloom applications of CPPU on fruit set, berry size and juice composition. In 2 of 3 trials, CPPU application increased berries per cluster and cluster weight and caused delayed maturity. Berry size was not significantly increased by treatment. In a Merlot vineyard with fanleaf degeneration, 4 g ac~(-1) CPPU application increased berries per cluster but not yield per vine at a=0.05 (GLM model p = 0.0402; treatment p = 0.0682). Cluster samples had lower pH and higher titratable acidity than untreated controls; however soluble solids were not affected by treatment. The 2 g ac~(-1) application resulted in fruit that appeared to have more color than other treatments. In a Pinot Noir vineyard grown in a cool site, both 2 g ac~(-1) and 4 g ac~(-1) rates applied early and late in the bloom period significantly increased cluster weight and vine yield compared to untreated control vines. Regardless of application timing, juice from clusters on treated vines had lower soluble solids and lower pH than clusters on untreated vines. In a second Pinot Noir vineyard, a 2 g ac~(-1) treatment resulted in nosignificant effect on yield components or fruit composition.
