During his working life Doug was an instrumentation and control engineer. After he retired, he joined the Australian Plants Society, NSW to learn more about the flora of his local area. He has since photographed many of the native plants in the Sydneyarea and has travelled extensively to photograph plants in other parts of Australia. Two things really impressed me about Kangaroo Island: one was the way the South Australian (SA) Government, the SA National Parks and Wildlife Service and the local inhabitants are striving to protect the island's large areas of unspoilt wilderness and its unique flora and fauna, the other was the sheer size of the place. Kangaroo Island is bigger than most people realise - it is 155km east to west and 55km north to south at its widest point. This makes it the third largest island off the Australian coast (only Tasmania and Melville Island are bigger).
