Of the four species of palm endemic to Lord Howe Island, the best known is Howea forsteriana, which forms dense lowland forests in some areas. Howea is named forthe island and the species name, forsteriana, honours NSW Senator Henry William Forster, who was instrumental in obtaining female suffrage for Australia. Seeds from the plant were sent to England as early as 1868. Kentia palms, as they were then known, were soon features of Victorian palm courts, ballrooms and hotel foyers and created a new industry for the island.
