The super genus Corybas, to which helmet orchids of the genus Corysanthes belong, has about 200 species ranging from China, south through Australasia to subantarctic islands. All have a single leaf with a single flower sitting on it! South Australia has species from two different genera: Anzybas, the little pelicans, with two species and Corysanthes the helmet orchids with at least eight taxa. Corysanthes are confined to southern Australia. They require cool, shaded, damp conditions to exist so theyeither grow only in winter or occur in swamps. All but one species can be found in the Mt Lofty Ranges.
