The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens (MRBG) is strategically located near the southern entrance to Mackay City. A 51.4 ha site encompasses what was The Lagoons Water Supply and Recreation Reserve. The Lagoons are an anabranch of the Pioneer River and are a historically significant site, both pre and post European settlement. The MRBG has been fully planned from the outset with development to take place in stages over a number of years, based on funding. The main focus of the MRBG is on the plants of the surrounding bioregion, the Central Queensland Coast bioregion. However, Stages 1 and 2 along the eastern side of the Lagoons also recognise and celebrate historic, regional, cultural and sister-city links while showcasing native species not only of this region but from many other regions and to a lesser extent, internationally. Currently, Stage 3, on the western side of the Lagoons, is under construction.
