Reaching a height of 550 metres in the Gold Coast hinterland, Tamborine Mountain is part of the Mt Warning volcanic 'flows' formed some 23 million years ago. The Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens (TMBG) is situated on the loams that have developed onthis basalt and the soils from older rocks below. The Mountain enjoys a sub-tropical climate but has lower temperatures and higher humidity than the surrounding lowlands and coastal areas. The remaining stands of sub-tropical rainforest that once covered most of the mountain top are surrounded by wet sclerophyll forest that extends down the slopes with the towering Eucalyptus grandis (Flooded or Rose Gum), Lophostemon confertus (Brush Box) and Eucalyptus microcorys (Tallowwood) being the dominant species.
