Jim spent nearly 40 years working for CSIRO and 'retired'as a Chief Research Scientist in 1992. Post retirement he continued his scientific work but also devoted time to his wildflower interests. He is a past president of the Wildflower Society of WA.I once heard a tour operator refer to Cycads as 'Dinosaur plants'. That is a nice catchy term, very handy for gaining the attention of tourists. But it does not give the Cycads their proper dues. They preceded the Dinosaurs by at least 20 million years.Fossil Cycads are known from the Lower Permian of China, 270-280 million years ago. It was not until towards the end of the Permian, 251 million years ago, that a group known as Archosaurs appeared. This group went on to evolve into Dinosaurs during theera known as middle life or Mesozoic. (Note how zoologists have taken over the terminology - Mesozoic.) This era is known to them and to the public generally as the age of the Dinosaurs, but palaeobotanists refer to it as the age of the Cycads! Consequently, Cycad fossils are found in all continents including Antarctica. Museum drawings and dioramas which depict re-creations of Dinosaur life typically show Cycads as the dominant plants.
