Jenny has been studying changes in vegetation and erosion on the island since 1979, the year that myxomatosis was first used to control the rabbit population. Since then, she has regularly followed the ups-and-downs of the rabbit population and the effects of rabbits on the island and its vegetation, especially on the steep tussock-clad coastal slopes. Her most recent field season was in the 2013-14 summer.Along with most other subantarctic islands, Macquarie Island has had its share of introduced feral mammal pests - cats, rabbits, ship rats and house mice. Over the past couple of decades, all have been eradicated, in several successive campaigns - an extraordinary achievement by the management authority, the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service (TPWS), with logistic support from the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). Although all these species were interlinked in some way in their effects on each other and on the Macquarie Island ecosystems, rabbits and rodents had the most devastating impacts on the vegetation and the erosion regime, especially rabbits. Rats and mice caused more subtle impacts to vegetation through eating and caching seeds, and have had large impacts on small burrowing birds and invertebrates.
