IMAGINE IF THE brawny M3 and the secretarial Z4 had a little mechanical love tryst at a quaint garage in the German Alps. Nine months later, or at the end of whatever the gestation period is for great sports cars, the love child would be this, the magnificently sprightly M Roadster. After many a lap driving an M Roadster at the former Fl track in Jerez, Spain, this analysis follows: Love conquers all, Central to the Z4's conversion to greatness is the simple recipe of dropping a stronger engine into a smaller, lighter car - a recipe used by everyone from Henry Ford (the '32) and Carroll Shelby (Cobra) to John DeLorean (GTO) and jet car-builder Art Arfons. It's a darn good recipe.
