There may be no other alternative but to continue the importation of large numbers of breeder cattle in order to respond to the expected growth in local beef consumption as domestic cattle population continues to dwindle. Though considered as a stop-gap measure, industry leaders who met during the National Beef Congress '95 in Cagayan de Oro agreed that importation of breeder cattle may have to be continuously undertaken unless massive restocking of the cattle population is successfully done. The Department of Agriculture (DA), under its Medium-Term Livestock Development Program, plans to bring in some 365,000 breeder cattle from Australia between 1994 and 1998. Imports of breeders this year are expected to reach 150,000.
