Efficacy of Duckweed - Spirodela in Carp Diet

Experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of dried Spirodela in carp feed. Spirodela was cultured in plastic pools using cow dung and poultry dropping as manure, which was harvested periodically and sun dried to make Spirodela powder. Experimental diets were prepared by incorporating Spirodela powder @ 20% in the control diet (de-oiled rice bran -40%, de-oiled mustard cake -40% and meat cum bone meal-20%- D-l) by replacing 50% of rice bran (D-ll) or 50% of mustard cake (D-lll) or 100% of meatcum bone meal (D-IV). These diets were used for semi-intensive rearing of common carp, Cyprinus carpio for 90 days. Water quality (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and total alkalinity) arid growth increment of fish was recorded after every 15 days. The fingerlings of C. carpio fed with diets D-ill and D-IV recorded significantly higher weight gain than the fish fed on D-l and D-ll diet. Better food conversion ratio (FCR) and higher protein efficiency ratio (PER) were observed in fish fed with diet D-III (FCR= 0.89, PER= 3.80) followed by D- IV (FCR= 0.92, PER= 3-76), D- ti (FCR= 1.13, PER= 3.25) and D-l (FCR= 1.20, PER= 2.99). As compared to control (D-I) diet, 74.14 and 70.80 per cent higher yield was recorded with diets D-lll and D-IV, respectively. Inclusion of dried Spirodela @ 20% in carp feed by replacing 50% of , mustard cake (D-lll) or 100% of meat cum bone meal (D-IV) not only resulted in higher weight gain, but also lowered the feed cost by 15.94% and 49.27%, respectively and hence holdsgreat potential for utilization in carp feed.
