The study was undertaken to determine the effect of overweight and obesity on the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of the pre and post menopausal women. Subjects were divided into two groups according to their menopausal status in pre and post menopausal group and their BMD was measured by Bone Ultrasonometer. Body composition was analyzed and anthropometric measurements were taken by standard methods. The findings indicated that, among pre menopausal women, 57.5% had normal BMD, 40% had osteopenia and only 2.5% as had osteoporosis and among post menopausal women, 22.5% had normal BMD, 55% had osteopenia and 22.5% were identified as having osteoporosis. According to BMI, 50% of women were normal, 42.5% were overweight and 7.5% were obese in the pre menopausal group and among post menopausal women, 20% were normal, 42.5% were overweight and 37.5% were categorized as obese. Significant differences were observed in the weight, height, waist hip circumference, BMI, body fat, metabolic age, visceral fat amongwomen of both groups and measurements of post menopausal women were on higher side. Parameters like weight (-0.299), waist circumference (-0.283), hip circumference (-0.282) and BMI (-0.393), fat percent (-0.287), fat mass (-0.306), metabolic age (-0.379), visceral fat (-0.399) and degree of obesity (-0.398) showed overall negative correlation with BMD.
