Laboratory Evaluation of the Relative Toxicity of Some Novel Molecules on the Resurging Tea Looper Complex on Tea

India is the largest producer and consumer of tea worldwide in both quantity and quality. Dooars region of India significantly contributes to the total tea production of India. Recently, resurgence of a looper complex (Hyposidra infixaria Walker and H. talaca Walker) has seriously constrained the tea production of Dooars region. The pest population was monitored to be in the crisis phase leading to the disaster phase. To resist that disaster, immediate application of effective chemicals is of prime interest. Six new molecules including one mitochondrial uncoupler (single spectrum anthralinic diamide) and two insect growth regulators along with the conventional bio-pesticide (8f) were tested in laboratory bio-assay. The insect growth regulator (IGR)novaleuron was found to be highly effective along with some other new chemicals like indoxacarb, chlorantraniliprole, spinosad and emamectin benzoate. Emamectin benzoate was found to have the highest relative toxicity. These new chemicals have enough potential to be incorporated in the integrated pest management schedule to manage the looper complex pest population build up.
