Effect of soil water conservation practices on root growth, vegetative growth, yield and nutrient composition of brinjalon loamy sand soils

The effect of soil water conservation practices, viz., FYM (Farmyard Manure) mulch, cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) straw mulch, bui (Aerva pseudotomentosa) grass straw mulch, sub-surface application of FYM and no mulch as control on root growth, vegetative growth, yield and nutrient composition of brinjal was studied over a five year period on loamy sand soils in hot arid regions of western Rajasthan. Root growth properties were improved by organic mulching treatments, being greatest in FYM mulch. Ratios of root length to aerial parts and No. of primary branches of roots were not significantly affected by FYM incorporation treatment, although levels of these properties were higher than control. Vegetative growth properties were best with FYMand cluster bean straw mulching and poorest with control. Concentrations of N and K in leaves and fruits from plots receiving soil water conservation treatments were significantly higher than those from control. However, soil water conservation treatments had no significant influence on concentration of P in leaves. In case of concentrations of N and P in fruits, the plots treated with straw mulches did not show significant increase over control. The other soil water conservation treatments had significant influence on concentrations of these primary nutrients in the fruits. It is suggested that the higher root and vegetative growth, water use efficiency of the plant in the plots treated with soil water conservation practices contributed to these increases in yield and concentrations of essential plant nutrients in the leaves and fruits of brinjal.Key words: Brinjal (Solanum melongena L); Organic mulch; Farmyard manure; Growth, Yield and Mineral Composition.
