摘要

The leaf eating caterpillar or black headed caterpillar is causing severe damage to palms in certain internal pockets of Palakkad and Pollachi areas of Tamilnadu recently. The pest occurs round the year with a spike in population during summer (March-May). Under favourable conditions the sporadic outbreaks lead to severe damage in coconut plantations. The older leaves of the palms are reduced to dead brown tissue and only three or four youngest leaves at the center of the crown remain green in caseof severe outbreaks of leaf eating caterpillar. The outbreak the of the pest infestation result in drastic reduction yield of coconut by reducing photosynthetic area of the crop.
