It is estimated that on an average 15-20% of commercial spawn is lost every year due to contamination by different types of microorganisms. The eereal grains used for spawn substrate preparation are considered as the main source of contamination and a re proved that the grains harbour various kinds of microorganisms. According to an estimate one gram of grain sample contains about 43,000 to 108,000 propagules of bacteria, 228 of actinomycetes, 12,000 of fungi and a large number of yeasts. So in order to produce 1 g of contamination-free spawn one has to destroy about 100,000 propagules of microorganisms. Most of the investigations in India have remained confined to fungal contamination with least attention to bacterial contaminants which in fact pose more problems and offer limited options to the spawn makers.
