It requires approximately 3000-5000 litres of water to grow one kilogram of rice. About 22 million hectares of irrigated dry season rice experience "economic water scarcity", in South and Southeast Asia and two million hectare of Asia's irrigated dryseason rice and 13 mha of its wet season rice would suffer from "physical water scarcity" by 2025. Declining water availability is threatening the sustainability of this rice ecosystem. Most of the high-yielding varieties grown in irrigated and rainfed lowland ecosystems are highly susceptible to water scarcity condition
