Non genetic factors affecting mortality of beetal kids.

The data recorded on 1621 birth of Beetal kids for the period of 22 years were utilized to study the effect of non-genetic factors on mortality in kids from birth to 6 months of age under the semi-intensive feeding system. The effect of year, season, type of birth and birth weight were found significant (p<0.01), whereas age group and sex were non-significant. The overall annual mortality ranged between 5.36 to 39.13% with the mean value of 18.88% over the years. Mortality was highest in winter (39.18%) followed by spring (19.63%), summer (16.76%) and autumn (12.01%) season. It was also highest between 31-90 days age group (7.16%) followed by 91 to 180 days age group (7.00%) and birth to 30 days age group (6.05%). The highest kid mortality was (33.33%) for triplet, while it was 24.37% for twin and 13.57% for single. The mortality rate for birth weight group <=1.9 kg, 2.0-2.4 kg, 2.5-2.9 kg and >=3.0 kg was 24.39, 18.33, 15.89 and 15.41%, respectively. It was concluded that the mortality can be reduced by producing the kids in the spring season so that they will get favourable environment up to six months of age and post harvest field for better growth.
