STRICTLY SPEAKING, you can argue that the new 500C is not a full convertible. Much of its bodywork remains unmoved when you hit the roof-open button and watch its neat fabric roof glide rearwards. None of the pillars disappear, and the roof rails stay in place. So the 500 convertible is really a car with a very big sunroof. But this is actually a pretty good way to lift the lid of a baby car; there's a smaller bundle of furled material at the rear, making it look less pramlike than an open Mini. The body's rigidity is more easily preserved too, and occupants aren't battered into wishing that the roof were shut moments after it has opened.
