If you were to spend this sort of money on a new Fiesta we'd understand. But there are scores of interesting used options available. IT'S FUNNY HOW much cars can change as they go through their lives. Jaguar's S-type R started life as a stopgap, tasked with fighting off BMWs M5 and Audi's RS6. It was priced about 10 per cent below them in a tacit acknowledgement that it wasn't quite the car they were. Its job was to keep a place at the table for Jaguar while better cars like the XF were being conceived and put into production. There was never anything wrong with the way it drove. Indeed, Jaguar handling guru Mike Cross let it be known that it was his favourite car in the range, and that future Jaguars would use not only most of its underpinnings, but also its handling compromises. He regarded it as on the money for a sporting Jag: more refined and less knobbly than the competition, yet with fine, sensitive steering and brilliant stability.
