Audi and Toyota are both fielding hybrids at Le Mans, but their methods of storing electric power are very different from each other. Whoever wins, this weekend will be a landmark for the Le Mans 24 Hours. In the past 89 years, all sorts of weird and wonderful cars have taken to the legendary French street circuit, with all sorts of innovations from air brakes to gas turbines. But this year two works teams will bring a new technology to La Sarthe, as Audi and Toyota try to be the first teams to win the race using genuine hybrid technology. Audi being Audi, it is hedging its bets and also racing two conventional versions of its R18 LMP1 prototype, but testing times at Le Mans show that it's the hybrids that have the pace, Allan McNish setting the fastest lap, with the sister car second. But encouragingly, for those hoping for an actual race this weekend, the fastest Toyota TS030 was just 1.3sec off McNish's pace - not bad for a car running in public for the first time in its life, and not much more than a blink of the eye in terms of a track with an 8.47-mile lap.
