I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T have done it, because it's not something a typical owner is likely to be able to replicate. But when the opportunity came to park the CLS for a week and tool around in a C-class estate instead, I grabbed it with both hands. My motives were two-fold: first to discover if the same sense of deep quality that pervades the CLS can also be found further down the range, but also to find out how the same engine performs in a smaller, lighter car.
