Integrated weed management in okra (Hibiscus esculentus)

摘要

Okra (Hibiscus esculentus) is an important vegetable crop grown in Andhra Pradesh. Besides insect-pest and disease damage, the weed infestation causes 33-40 percent yield reduction in vegetable crops. Due to unavailability of labour, the weeding getsdelayed and thereby reduction in yield occurs. Hence, there is a need for integrating chemical with mechanical weeding. It has been reported that in tomato (Raddy et al., 1996) and brinjal (Redday et al., 2000), application of herbicides at lower rate as pre-emergence fb one inter cultivation at 25 DAS recorded the lowest weed dry matter, highest WCE and greater yield. Further, Behera and Singh (1999) reported unchecked weeds reduced fruit yield of tomato by 47 percent. Integration of chemical and non-chemical methods performed better than hoeing and manual weeding. The information on weed control in okra is meagre, hence, an experiment was undertaken to study the integrated weed management in okra during kharif season.
