Effect of metribuzin on weed control and grain yield of wheat

Weed competition throughout the crop period caused yield reduction to the tune of 15 to 50 percent or some times more depending upon the weed densities (Malik et al., 1989), type of weed grown and amount of nutrients depleted by weed from the field.Grassy weeds in wheat are major weeds which pose a serious threat to its successful cultivation. Weeds usually absorb nutrients faster and in relatively larger amounts than crop and, therefore, may decrease the crop yield. Among the herbicides, use of isoproturon for controlling grassy weeds like Phalaris minor has been found to be the most effective and economical tool (Malik et al., 1989) for quite a long period. But from the last 4-5 years, there are frequent reports that this weed is not properly controlled by the use of isoproturon, this may be attributed to non-adoption of proper herbicide use technology and due to the development of resistance by P. minor to isoproturon in Haryana (Malik and Samundar Singh, 1993). Keeping these facts in mind, this study was, therefore, undertaken to assess the effect of metribuzin on weed control and grain yield of wheat.
