In onion (Allium cepa L.) nursery, the problem of weeds is very serious due to its slow growth and poor canopy. Research information with respect to herbicidal control of weeds in onion nursery, particularly under agro-climatic condition of centralplain zone of Uttar Pradesh is scanty. The present investigation was undertaken to develop an effective chemical weed control schedule in onion nursery. A field experiment was conducted at Student's Instructional Farm of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, Kanpur during winter 1997, to develop effective chemical weed control schedule in onion nursery. Three herbicides viz., pendimethalin (0.50, 0.75 and 1.0 kg ha~(-1)), oxadiazon (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 kg ha~(-1)) and metolachlor(1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg ha~(-1)) were compared with untreated check. All these treatments were replicated thrice in randomized block design. Soil of the experimental field was sandy loam in texture, deficient in nitrogen and medium in phosphorus and potassium. Kalyanpur-red round, an improved variety of onion, was used in this study. Fifty gram seeds per plot (2 m X 1 m) were broadcast and incorporated in the raised beds soil on October 23, 1997.
