The principle of using reducing fungicide inputs on potato cultivars with good late blight resistance to control Phytophthora infestans leaf blight has been demonstrated in other European countries. As EU legislation moves to promote lower pesticide inputs, research is being carried out to provide data to enable agronomists to recommend this strategy, including in the UK. In this study integrated control, comprising of cultivar resistance used in conjunction with reduced fungicide inputs, was highlyeffective in controlling P. infestans, even when disease pressure was high under UK conditions. Using a moderately resistant cultivar (Cara) with a foliar blight resistance rating of 5 was sufficient to reduce the fungicide dose required to control lateblight substantially whilst maintaining equivalent control to a reference standard. Where reduced fungicide inputs were applied at extended intervals to moderately resistant varieties disease control was, in the majority of situations, as effective as the reference treatment. Where resistant cultivars with a foliar resistance rating of 7 (Sarpo Mira) were used, disease control was superior to the reference treatment regardless of fungicide rate and application interval.
