With a history of experience in food production I became interested in issues surrounding food security. Upon completing a Master's degree in food management and security it became clear that the literature on the subject was enormous and somewhat incoherent. On a very simple level there has been much written that confounds, complicates and contradicts itself. Moreover with a dynamically changing macro environment it would seem these complications are increasing exponentially. At the heart of the issue is one of perspective for while some see food security as simply alleviating hunger or providing the means to achieving this, others argue that the subject is much broader, already over complicated and perhaps misunderstood from many quarters. Othersstill go on to suggest that with the broadening of the traditional concepts of hunger and malnutrition to include much wider societal issues and a more inclusive remit towards environmental, political and economic forces, the demarcation of the food security concept has become increasingly difficult to elucidate let alone understand. This non-consensual position is evident in the literature and my desire to comprehend not only these often confusing or contradictory positions, but also gain a respectablelevel of understanding of the bigger picture led me to take up further research in the form of a PhD. My PhD aims to explore the way people understand food security in its entirety. In particular I have tasked myself with the job of evaluating food security frameworks and how they are seen as representative of the concepts themselves. Building on this and three years of research it would seem that food security is being viewed from many widely differing lenses with few, even among those who claim to, truly examining it from a holistic perspective. Of the numerous misleading barriers to a full understanding and one that I find particularly alarming is the recurring notion that the modem idea of food security developed out of the challenges and ideologies of the 1970's. With the aim of tackling these and other contradictions as well as fulfilling aspirations of fully understanding the subject I am contracted to write a book on the subject to be published October 2011 by Taylor and Francis.
