摘要

The global acreage devoted to growing genetically modified (GM) crops continues to rise-albeit more slowly in 2002 than in past years-as does the debate over their viability in the marketplace. Protests in Europe over sales of "Frankenfood" have ledto the removal of GM ingredients from food for both humans and animals. Protests in the United States, on the other hand, generate comparatively little press. One difficulty with looking at consumer attitudes about GM foods is that only a handful of polls have been conducted by disinterested parties using nonbiased survey instruments. Beyond that, only a few surveys have been conducted across countries. Those caveats aside, once the most clearly biased surveys have been removed from the mix, some trendsthat appear to generalize across surveys and countries begin to emerge.
