In the first quarter of fiscal 2008 ended the 31st of December 2007, the key Scientific Instruments division of Varian Inc (Palo Alto, CA) achieved 11% year-on-year growth, with sales of 197.0 million. Despite weakness from Japan and the US, growth came from both the life sciences, with strong sales of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and dissolution testing instruments, and spectrophotometers, and industrial areas, including instruments for environmental, energy and food applications.
