Within a decade of their development,the various techniques that fall under the umbrella of scanning probe microscopy (SPM),particularly atomic force microscopy (AFM),had become part of the routine armoury of tools available to scientists involved in metrology and surface characterisation.In those ten years,annual sales rose to over 100 million.
