The clean car does not exist, but the car Industry is tackling the pollutants one by one to reduce or even eliminate them. Obviously this is not without cost. The car manufacturers are gradually falling in line with the new antipollution regulations. It is certainly the only way to proceed in this area without disadvantaging one manufacturer compared to another. The table opposite shows that the petrol engine emits less carbon monoxide (and unburned hydrocarbons) than a diesel. For its part, the diesel emits more nitrogen oxide NO{sub}x and soot particulates. The current and future regulations, whether they are European, North American or Japanese, continually reduce these limits particularly for diesels. The other countries or continents tend to follow on, generally with a time lag.
