The paper by Kamien in this issue of the Internal Medicine Journal (IMJ) on clinical genetics and training in this subspecialty is timely. Many physicians will be unfamiliar with the role of the clinical geneticist and in this molecular age the role is rapidly evolving. The paper is written about the experience of a first-year trainee in a specific training setting and presents a limited view of clinical genetics. Thus a widening of the perspective is in order. Clinical genetics is an approved advanced training speciality administered by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and there is a Specialist Advisory Committee in Clinical Genetics for candidates in Australia and New Zealand. A summary of training requirements can be viewed on the College website.
