This article shows some of the environmental challenges facing Africa today andattempts to explain why many of these challenges cannot be met adequately withoutthe involvement of geoscientists. A diverse continent, Africa is characterized by someunsullied natural environment, but exploitation of its huge natural resource endowmentbrings with it many threats and stresses that imperil the very fabric of our existence. An overview and analysis of the health impacts of selected hazardous geologicalprocesses as well as the exploitation of natural resources illustrates how local problemsmight be more efficiently and economically tackled. By performing a continent-widereview of the situation and trends, and by casting light on the shadows, an attempt ismade to expose the dimensions of the problems. This is a strong basis for identifyingpriorities and alternatives for action without losing the continental perspective andrespecting an integrated approach. Geoscientists have a set of skills and perspectives that are ideally suited to dealingwith the varied and complex problems that arise naturally over the long time scale ofEarth history. Those studying African situations may have something special to offer,as human interactions with geological materials and processes – at least at some levels– appear to be greater in Africa, as a developing region, than elsewhere in the world.But not a single group of countries or scientists working within them can solve thesevere legacy of environmental deterioration and find ways toward a sustainable futurealone. Environmental cooperation between geoscientists and practitioners of other keyscience disciplines (eco-toxicologists, physicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, etc.) isthus not only a necessary condition for substantial improvements of our ecologicalsituation, but also the most natural first step of integration of African situations asexamples requiring global responses. These are the challenges, but they are also the opportunities for Africa, whereappropriate policies have to be established to progress toward sustainable developmentin a viable environment.
