Pigeonpea is an important legume crop of the semi-arid tropics, especially India. The large demand for pigeonpea makes it mandatory to improve this crop not only in terms of productivity but also in protein quality. Large improvements in pigeonpea arepossible using the tools of genetic engineering. Successful transformation protocols are a prerequisite for genetic manipulation. Agrobacterium tumefaciens based vectors have been extensively used for transformation of several dicotyledonous plants (Klee et al. 1987). However, no such reports are available in pigeonpea. Therefore, preliminary studies on pigeonpea seedlings were conducted to develop Ti-plasmid based vectors for transformation of pigeonpea seedlings.
