摘要

A Study was conducted with 300 numbers of Kalahandi buffaloes belonging to different age groupsmaintained in their native tract in Kalahandi and Nuapara districts of Orissa. The common phenotype orKalahandi buffalo comprised medium and compact body; grey, ash grey or black body coat with brown andgrey hairs, sparsely distributed over the body especially on abdomen and chest; forehead being littleprotruded; large head with prominent fascial muscle; prominent eyes with a narrow red margin around theeyelid; short and slopy neck, broard and half curved horns running backward and curving forward at the tip;thin and medium ear; prominent brisket; short tail ending with a black/white switch; strong, straight andshort legs, the legs below the knee being light grey or dark brown in colour; large and well developed chestwith wide, well rounded and very prominent ribs; wide and barrel shaped abdomen; flat and broad flank;less fleshy and straight hips; narrow and highly slopy rump; strong and straight hocks; black, compact anduniform hooves; good size udder with long and medium sized teats, and prominent, tortuous milk vein. Thebirth weight of male and females calves were 25.42 +- 0.030 and 23.74 +- 0.025 kg, respectively. The bodyweight at maturity in male and female calves were 300.97 +- 2.360 and 294.12 +- 1.790 kg, respectively. Theeconomic traits of Kalahandi buffloes involving their age at maturity (months), age at first calving (months),body weight at first calving (kg), post-partum oestrus (days), service period (days), gestation period (days),lactation length (days), dry period (days), calving interval (days) and average daily milk yield (kg) were foundto be 34.15 +- 0.20, 44.34 +- 0.47, 364.99 +- 4.20, 180.12 +- 7.38, 186.10 +- 6.28, 312.10 +- 0.88, 258.16 +- 6.35,208.46 +- 6.38, 439.52 +- 14.80 and 2.719 +- 0.20, respectively. The overall average calf mortality in Kalahandibuffaloes was observed to be 40 per cent. The male calves had a higher mortality rate (51%) than femalecalves (19%). A pair of bullocks could plough 1205 +- 0.02m~2 of area in eight hours during a day and coulddraw an average load of 985 +- 9.543 kg with an average speed of 4.96 +- 0.72 km/hr.
