COMPARISON OF LACTATION MODELS FOR SOLIDS NOT FAT AND TOTAL SOLIDS IN MILK OF MURRAH BUFFALOES

The average solids-not-fat (SNF) and total solids (TS) were 9.57 +- 0.03 and 17.12 +- 0.11 per cent,respectively in milk of Murraha buffaloes after first month of calving. Both these milk constituents decreasedwith advancement of lactation and attained their lowest percentage of 9.22 +- 0.03 and 16.33 +- 0.12,respectively during the fourth month of lactation. Thereafter as the lactation progressed, both SNF and TSstarted increasing slowly and reached 9.43 +- 0.05 and 17.97 +- 0.19 per cent, respectively during the tenthmonth of lactation. Therefore, the. observed changes in SNF and TS percentages in milk of buffaloesfollowed a trend opposite to lactatio'h curve of milk production. Five algebraic functions namely, quadratic,parabolic exponential, inverse polynomial, gamma type and product of two exponential functions werefitted to monthly least squares means of SNF and TS during a lactation after calving. The study revealedthat gamma type function was best representative lactation model for both the milk constituents. The fittedfunctions: Y_1 = 9.46421t ~(-0.0464) e ~(0.0107t) for solid not fat (SNF) and Y, =16.72381t~(-0.0859) e~(0.0266t) for total solids (TS)described the lactation trend having three phases, i.e., descending phase, trough phase and ascendingphase in milk of Murrah buffaloes.
