摘要

The relationship between depression in the older people and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is controversial. Several lines of evidence suggest that geriatric patients affected by depression are at increased risk to develop AD and late-life depressed patients frequently show cognitive impairment (Diniz et at, 2013). On the other hand, depression may occur in 30-40% of the AD patients, and depressed AD patients show an increased cognitive impairment, as compared with non-depressed AD patients (Shim and Yang, 2006). The existence of a clinical association between depression and AD is established; however, the nature of this relationship is poorly understood. Changes in level and function of neurotrophins, in particular of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), have been described in both depression and AD; decreased BDNF levels have been found in both human and animal serum in models of depression and AD (Caraci et al, 2010). These findings lay the groundwork for considering BDNF as a potential candidate marker for AD-related depression.
