Experiments were conducted to screen the insecticidal activity of Xenorhabdus associated with seven indigenous populations of Steinernema spp. Nematode strains X6 and X7 were classified as insecticidal as they were orally toxic to the neonates of Helicoverpa armigera and were able to impart mortality of 50% or more. Further characterization of the insecticidal activity of the strain X6 showed that the sonicated cells were equally effective in causing mortality (82%) and reducing the weight of the larvae (91.2%) in comparison to the control. The supernatant possessed poor oral toxicity (38% mortality) but there was a significant decline in the weight of the larvae to upto 53.52% over healthy controls.
