This study sought to determine whether the combination of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (GG) and L. rhamnosus Lc705 (Lc705) enhances the innate immune responses of human monocyte-derived macrophages to a greater extent that either of the 2 bacteria when used alone. In addition, effects of the combination were compared to those of Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris ARH74 (ARH74). Human macrophages were stimulated with viable GG, Lc705 and ARH74 for 24 h, and production of TNF alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12, as well as the chemokines, CCL2/monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and CXCL10/IFN-inducible protein 1 (IP-10). The combination of GG and Lc705 enhanced the IL-1 beta response to a greater extent than Lc705 alone and induced TNF- alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6 and IL-10 more strongly than ARH74. However, ARH74 was the most potent inducer of chemokines MCP-1 and IP-10.
