Objective: To study the aging of eye grounds, fundus arteriola were measured with ophthalmoscopic images.Design: The images of the fundus arteriola were studied referring to the age; statistical distribution (kurtosis) of the image brightness and spatial resolution (the two-dimensional Fourier transform) were measured for the images,Materials and Methods: One hundred and ninety four volunteers, aged 20 to 81 years, participated in this study, after informed consent. Fundus oculi were observed with an ophthalmoscope and taken with a digital camera into uncompressed files of 11 M pixels. An arteriole was selected within a region of interest of 300 pixel square near the optic disc, and the kurtosis and the slope were obtained for the red, green and blue brightness of the image, respectively. The regression analysis and the correlation coefficient were studied between the above results and the age.Results: The mean kurtosis was -0.27 ± 1.15 (standard deviation) for the red brightness, -0.50 ±0.73 for the green brightness, and -0.13 ± 0.48 for the blue brightness, respectively. Significant differences were noted between the kurtosis of the red and that of the green brightness, and between the kurtosis of the green and that of the blue brightness. The mean slope was -0.02 ± 0.03 for the red brightness, -0.12 + 0.07 for the green brightness, and -0.24 + 0.06 for the blue brightness, respectively. Significant differences were noted between them. The regression analysis showed the predictive equations; [Y = -0.0022 x X-0.1293] and -0.02 (correlation coefficient) for the red kurtosis; [Y = -0.0204 X X-1.85] and -0.29 for the green kurtosis; [Y = -0.0123 X X-0.9467] and -0.26 for the blue kurtosis, respectively. The predictive equations were [Y = 0.0002 xX-0.0185] and 0.02 for the red slope; [Y = 0.0029 x X-0.3183] and 0.42 for the green slope; [Y = 0.0012 x X-0.3244] and 0.20 for the blue slope, respectively.Conclusion: The kurtosis increased significantly with aging for the green and blue brightness, and the slope increased significantly with aging for the green and blue brightness of the retinal arteriolar images. Ophthalmoscopic arteriolar images should provide us with certain information correlated to aging.
