We read with great interest the recent article by Tsai H. C. et al. - "Effect of valproic acid on the outcome of glioblastoma multiforme" - on the effect of valproic acid on the outcome of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). As they note, GBM is a form of cancer with a dismal prognosis, and one for which relatively little increase in the life expectancy has been reported despite leaps in the medical and surgical technology in recent decades. As stated in the paper, valproic acid has been widely demonstrated to have HDAC inhibition properties and anticancer effects in vitro. However, research needs to be done to demonstrate whether levels typically attained in the treatment for the purposes of seizure prophylaxis leads to an improvement in survival in patients with GBM.
