Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has backed TNK-BP's attempt to expand into Al- geria by acquiring assets from its British par- ent. But the Russian-UK venture will have to make sure its efforts don't conflict with those of Gazprom, which is also eyeing the BP in- terests as part of a grand plan to expand in Africa and Latin America, and establish Rus- sia as a global energy superpower.
