Drax Power, owner-operator of the UK’s biggest coal-fired power station in northern England, said Tuesday it will freeze plans to build three standalone, or dedicated, 290 MW biomass-fired power plants until the UK government offers clearer signals on the amount and duration of biomass subsidies. Drax made the announcement the same day it unveiled first-half profits of £93.9 million ($150 million), up from £23.5 million in the same period of 2009. It said “regulatory uncertainty means development work for [our] first dedicated biomass plant will continue into 2011 before an investment case can be proven.” Drax originally planned to make an investment decision this year, after announcing the project in 2008.
