US Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar was in Anchorage on Tuesday to gauge public opinion on the proposed opening of new areas of Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) to oil and gas leasing. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin spoke in favor of pressing forward with proposed lease sales there, particularly in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. She said their development is crucial to keeping supplies flowing down the Trans-Alaskan pipeline, which is currently running at only one-third of its 2 million b/d capacity. It supplies some 14% of the US crude supplies.
