A bacterial zoonosis, cat scratch disease (CSD), is caused primarily by the gram-negative rod Bartonella henselae and typically presents with tender regional lymphadenopathy, fever, and malaise after cutaneous inoculation. Additional constitutional symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, myalgias, and arthralgias. Ocular complications occur in 5% to 10% of patients with CSD, whereas more rare manifestations such as encephalitis and osteomyelitis occur in about 1% of patients.
