Change is the key word for the UK's contaminated land remediation industry, according to one of the country's experts. Mike Southall, who is Castle Cement's geo-environmental products manager, claims that the industry can no longer rely on taking the contamination away from the site to provide a risk-free solution. He warns that it has to embrace the new technologies that offer both a sustainable solution to the problem and realistic alternatives to "dig and dump". The alternative he has in mind is cement, in which category he includes a number of different powders that react with water to develop cementitious properties. He contends that cementitious remediation offers a number of benefits when compared with more conventional and widely used remediation techniques, particularly landfill. For example, it provides solutions with a clearly defined cost profile and can actually improve the physical characteristics of the ground in addition to managing the contamination issues. It is based on well-understood science; works well with other techniques and can be used to manage a wide range of different contaminants.
