The energy efficiency credentials and ability of the winning entries of the Government's ?60k House competition to meet current building regulations has been questioned by a backbench Labour MP. Alan Simpson, MP for Nottingham South, has strongly criticised the Government's approval of lightweight housing systems for the ?60k house. Their construction would provide homes that are too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Such homes would require increased air conditioning and heating with consequent higher energy demands and carbon emissions. Simpson described the Government's decision as 'a classic example of stealing cheaply from today what we will have to pay dearly for tomorrow'. His concerns are echoed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors who have raised the issue with the environmental minister, Elliott Morley.
