Increasing numbers of people in the U.S. continue to struggle to create a balance between work and their personal lives. The twin forces of demongraphics and economic necessity have made the need for alternatives to full-time work an urgent matter for many members of the workforce. Young couples struggle to make ends meet on a single income. Baby boomers must care for young children and ageing parents. And most people near retirement must now consider some new source of income owing to the havoc wrought with retirement investment accounts in recent years. More and more people want to work in good-quality, meaningful jobs, but cannot or do not want to commit to the standard full-time schedule.
