Kevin Kevany looks at how soaring energy prices create demand for power monitoring and control systems. The soaring cost of electricity - particularly at peak load - looks to be part of our collective lots for the foreseeable future. Add to that, in most industrial enterprises, after wages, the next biggest cost is the energy bill. Which means that companies could increasingly be faced with a "Sophie's Choice" of cutting back on one or t'other. Do you shrink your production line or make a number of staff - the firms' intellectual capital - redundant? As we have seen recently with our own creaky infrastructure - e.g. power links between North and South Island - a huge amount of equipment that has been banging on past its sell-by date is going to have to be replaced. Should this be a time to radically rethink and redesign our systems for the new high-cost era?
