The US Army Corps of Engineers expects to temporarily halt traffic on the lower Ohio river within the next two days because of low water and damage to a dam in the area. The corps said damage to Lock and Dam 52 near Brookport, Illinois, has exacerbated low-water conditions and increased the likelihood that the pool of water around the facility will soon sink below the 9ft level authorized for vessel traffic. The 25-mile stretch upriver from the lock and dam to the Smithland Lock and Dam could be closed for up to 96 hours, depending on weather conditions, while the corps makes more repairs.
